Time To Check Your Smoke Detectors

October 31, 2008 · Leave a Comment

It’s that time of year again the leaves are changing and the days are getting shorter!  This weekend kicks off daylight savings time and a great time to think about checking your smoke detectors.

The following are some of the tips that R & N Electric, Inc. recommends:

  • Smoke detectors serve an important role in home safety and the batteries should be tested every month.
  • Press the battery test button on the unit to see if the unit is functioning correctly (you should hear the alarm sound).
  • If the alarm does not sound, open the unit up and make sure it is clean and that all the connections are in properly connected.
  • If the battery is more than one year old, replace the battery.  We believe that it is a good rule that when daylight savings time is here to always change the battery in your smoke detectors and make sure they are clean ~ This way it becomes a habit!
  • Once again press the battery test button on the unit to see if the unit is functioning correctly.  Another alternative is lighting a candle and holding it approx. 6 inches below the unit.  If the smoke detector still does not sound, blow the candle out and let the smoke rise into the unit.
  • If again, the alarm does not sound it is time to replace the entire smoke detector.  Smoke detector units should be replaced every 8 – 10 years as they have a limited life.  The performance of smoke detectors older than 10 years are just simply not reliable.

If you have any questions please feel free to give us a call; we are hear for you!                                               R & N Electric, Inc. 775-425-5144

Preventive Maintenance

October 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Preventive Maintenance is a great way to save money and avoid bad timing on preventable repairs.

Electricity, when it’s used, produces heat.  This heat causes expanding and contracting on your electrical system.  This expanding and contracting loosens the screws in your electrical panel.  By having your main system maintained it will help reduce costly repairs.

Our customer protection plan includes the following:

  • We will check your panel for potential electrical hazards and fire hazards.
  • We will torque all the wires in your electrical panel.
  • We will inspect the inside of the panel for signs of rust, water penetration and scorched wires.
  • We will trip the circuit breakers and ground fault breakers to make sure they are functioning properly.  If fuses are used, we will make sure they are screwed in tightly.
